Book Review : A quiet kind of thunder Sara Barnard

A Quiet Kind of Thunder

A Quiet Kind of Thunder by Sara Barnard

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

sep 24-29

A girl who can’t speak and a boy who can’t hear go on a journey of self-discovery and find support with each other in this gripping, emotionally resonant novel from bestselling author Sara Barnard. Perfect for fans of Morgan Matson and Jandy Nelson.

Steffi doesn’t talk, but she has so much to say.
Rhys can’t hear, but he can listen.

Steffi has been a selective mute for most of her life. The condition’s name has always felt ironic to her, because she certainly does not “select” not to speak. In fact, she would give anything to be able to speak as easily and often as everyone around her can. She suffers from crippling anxiety, and uncontrollably, in most situations simply can’t open her mouth to get out the words.

Steffi’s been silent for so long that she feels completely invisible. But Rhys, the new boy at school, sees her. He’s deaf, and her knowledge of basic sign language means that she’s assigned to help him acclimate. To Rhys, it doesn’t matter that Steffi doesn’t talk. As they find ways to communicate, Steffi discovers that she does have a voice, and that she’s falling in love with the one person who makes her feel brave enough to use it. But as she starts to overcome a lifelong challenge, she’ll soon confront questions about the nature of her own identity and the very essence of what it is to know another person

Review : this book was beautiful I loved it Steffi is mute she meets Rhys who is deaf they start to form a friendship I cried a bit in this book cause I related so much to Steffi . Rhys and Steffi start dating . Steffi starts to talk a bit more . Rhys and Steffi decide to go on a secret trip but then a accident happens and Steffi has to talk to get Rhys to the hospital . Rhys sends steffi a email and she tells him to meet up with her and they talk and they decide to talk way more and no more secrets loved this book.

Quotes :

“Panic attacks are a lot like being drunk in some ways, you lose self-control. You cry for seemingly no reason. You deal with the hangover long into the next day.”

“Here are three separate but similar things: shyness, introversion and social anxiety. You can have one, two or all three of these things simultaneously. A lot of the time people thing they’re all the same thing, but that’s just not true. Extroverts can be shy, introverts can be bold, and a condition like anxiety can strike whatever kind of social animal you are.

Lots of people are shy. Shy is normal. A bit of anxiety is normal. Throw the two together, add some brain-signal error – a NO ENTRY sign on the neural highway from my brain to my mouth perhaps, though no one really knows – and you have me.”

One of Us Is Lying

One of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

August 2-sep 10

The Breakfast Club meets Pretty Little Liars, One of Us Is Lying is the story of what happens when five strangers walk into detention and only four walk out alive. Everyone is a suspect, and everyone has something to hide.
Pay close attention and you might solve this.
On Monday afternoon, five students at Bayview High walk into detention.
Bronwyn, the brain, is Yale-bound and never breaks a rule.
Addy, the beauty, is the picture-perfect homecoming princess.
Nate, the criminal, is already on probation for dealing.
Cooper, the athlete, is the all-star baseball pitcher.
And Simon, the outcast, is the creator of Bayview High’s notorious gossip app.
Only, Simon never makes it out of that classroom. Before the end of detention, Simon’s dead. And according to investigators, his death wasn’t an accident. On Monday, he died. But on Tuesday, he’d planned to post juicy reveals about all four of his high-profile classmates, which makes all four of them suspects in his murder. Or are they the perfect patsies for a killer who’s still on the loose?
Everyone has secrets, right? What really matters is how far you would go to protect them

Review : I really loved this book so this is about
Bronwyn , Addy , cooper and Nate who after one event are connected to each other . They all have detention and the school gossip of the school is also there but he ends up dying cause of a peanut allergy and they are all suspects cause Simon wrote a gossip blog and there secrets starts coming out . Bronwyn cheated on a test addy cheated on her boyfriend who is a dick by the way cooper is gay and Nate sells drugs . Bronwyn and Nate start getting close but then Nate gets sent to jail and bronwyn helps Nate prove his innocence. Cause Simon wanted to die so he planned to make it look like murder when it was actually suicide and Jake addy’s ex boyfriend helped and actually tried to kill addy but cooper helped and Jake got sent to jail . Really enjoyed this book.

Quote
“She’s a princess and you’re a jock,” he says. He thrusts his chin toward Bronwyn, then at Nate. “And you’re a brain. And you’re a criminal. You’re all walking teen-movie stereotypes.”

Book Review: Far from the tree Robin Benway

Far from the Tree

Far from the Tree by Robin Benway

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

July 28-August 1

A contemporary novel about three adopted siblings who find each other at just the right moment.

Being the middle child has its ups and downs.

But for Grace, an only child who was adopted at birth, discovering that she is a middle child is a different ride altogether. After putting her own baby up for adoption, she goes looking for her biological family, including—

Maya, her loudmouthed younger bio sister, who has a lot to say about their newfound family ties. Having grown up the snarky brunette in a house full of chipper redheads, she’s quick to search for traces of herself among these not-quite-strangers. And when her adopted family’s long-buried problems begin to explode to the surface, Maya can’t help but wonder where exactly it is that she belongs.

And Joaquin, their stoic older bio brother, who has no interest in bonding over their shared biological mother. After seventeen years in the foster care system, he’s learned that there are no heroes, and secrets and fears are best kept close to the vest, where they can’t hurt anyone but him.

Review : I freaking loved this book it was heartbreaking and beautiful about family . This is about 3 siblings who each are adopted except for Joaquin because he’s afraid
who decided to find each other and they get to know each other . Grace she’s going through a lot she just gave her baby up for adoption and wants to find her birth mother . Maya who is dealing with her parents always fighting and her mother secretly hiding alcohol. Joaquin who’s foster family wants to adopt him but he is afraid to be adopted because of his past . Grace goes back to school and gets bullied by some asshole who plays baby noises and she ends up punching him and goes to cry in the bathroom where she meets a new friend they develop a friendship which I really liked . Maya has a girlfriend who she ends up breaking up with . Maya mom ends up passing out drunk and ends up going to rehab . Joaquin I really felt for his character cause he’s been through so much . They all decide to find there birth mother but find out she died by there aunt but she cared for them all she just couldn’t keep them . Joaquin finally decides he wants to be adopted I cried a lot in this book.

Book Review: The couple next door Shari Lapeno

The Couple Next Door

The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

June 25-27

It all started at a dinner party. . .

A domestic suspense debut about a young couple and their apparently friendly neighbors–a twisty, rollercoaster ride of lies, betrayal, and the secrets between husbands and wives. . .

Anne and Marco Conti seem to have it all–a loving relationship, a wonderful home, and their beautiful baby, Cora. But one night when they are at a dinner party next door, a terrible crime is committed. Suspicion immediately focuses on the parents. But the truth is a much more complicated story.

Inside the curtained house, an unsettling account of what actually happened unfolds. Detective Rasbach knows that the panicked couple is hiding something. Both Anne and Marco soon discover that the other is keeping secrets, secrets they’ve kept for years.

What follows is the nerve-racking unraveling of a family–a chilling tale of deception, duplicity, and unfaithfulness that will keep you breathless until the final shocking twist.

Review : This book was crazy these people are kinda fucked up . Anne and Marco left there baby at home alone and when they come back the door is open and the baby isn’t there . Anne calls the cops and the detective is trying to find out what’s going on . Anne has postpartum depression and the detective thinks Anne and Marco might of killed her . The detective asks why they left the baby alone and they explain the neighbor didn’t want the baby there . I hated Cynthia she complained Anne wasn’t fun because she had a baby like what the fuck . So apparently Marco’s business wasn’t doing well and he went to Anne’s father for a loan and he said no so when drinking one night a guy comes up to Marco and they talk about doing a fake kidnapping so he kidnapped his own daughter mostly WTF but then the guy shows up dead . Anne’s father was actually involved cause he wanted to leave his wife but he knew he had no money so he was arrested . Anne gets Cora back . Anne goes next door to talk to Cynthia she was having an affair with her father and Cynthia says the baby should of died and Anne freaking kills her but doesn’t remember that how it ends WTF .

Book Review: Final Girls Riley Sager

Final Girls

Final Girls by Riley Sager

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

April 23- June 24

Ten years ago, college student Quincy Carpenter went on vacation with five friends and came back alone, the only survivor of a horror movie–scale massacre. In an instant, she became a member of a club no one wants to belong to—a group of similar survivors known in the press as the Final Girls. Lisa, who lost nine sorority sisters to a college dropout’s knife; Sam, who went up against the Sack Man during her shift at the Nightlight Inn; and now Quincy, who ran bleeding through the woods to escape Pine Cottage and the man she refers to only as Him. The three girls are all attempting to put their nightmares behind them, and, with that, one another. Despite the media’s attempts, they never meet.

Now, Quincy is doing well—maybe even great, thanks to her Xanax prescription. She has a caring almost-fiancé, Jeff; a popular baking blog; a beautiful apartment; and a therapeutic presence in Coop, the police officer who saved her life all those years ago. Her memory won’t even allow her to recall the events of that night; the past is in the past.

That is, until Lisa, the first Final Girl, is found dead in her bathtub, wrists slit, and Sam, the second, appears on Quincy’s doorstep. Blowing through Quincy’s life like a whirlwind, Sam seems intent on making Quincy relive the past, with increasingly dire consequences, all of which makes Quincy question why Sam is really seeking her out. And when new details about Lisa’s death come to light, Quincy’s life becomes a race against time as she tries to unravel Sam’s truths from her lies, evade the police and hungry reporters, and, most crucially, remember what really happened at Pine Cottage, before what was started ten years ago is finished.

Review : This book was crazy this is about Quincy and 10 years ago escaped being killed while all her friends died at pine cottage then one of the final girls died and another final girl shows up at her door. who is kinda fucked up and tries to get Quincy to deal with her pain of pine cottage . I loved how it had flashbacks to pine cottage going up to the killing of her friends and I will say I did not see what came coming . Sam meets coup who is Quincy cop friend who has a thing for Quincy . I didn’t like Quincy’s boyfriend I don’t think they were right for each other I’m glad they broke up . Quincy actually sleeps with coup which wow . It turns out Lisa didn’t kill herself she was murdered . Quincy asked the reporter to look into Sam and he does she’s not sam she’s actually tina who killed her stepfather who was touching her . Sam takes her hostage and gets her to actually remember what happened at pine cottage Joe didn’t kill Quincy’s friends it was Coup who saved her oh my freaking god he has a thing for killing girls he killed Lisa and the real Sam . Quincy kills Coup . Quincy gets a tattoo and hears about a killing where only one girl survives and goes to her to teach her to be a final girl .

Quotes : I’m a fucking final girl”

Baking is a science, as rigorous as chemistry or physics. There are rules that must be followed. Too much of one thing and not enough of another can lead to ruin. I find comfort in this. Outside, the world is an unruly place where men prowl with sharpened knives. In baking, there is only order.”

If he did,” I say, “Coop’s too much of a gentleman to make a big deal out of it.” “Gentleman?” Sam says. “He’s a cop. From my experience, they fuck like jackhammers.”

Book Review: Moxie Jennifer Mathieu

MoxieMoxie by Jennifer Mathieu
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

March 24-26

Moxie girls fight back!

Vivian Carter is fed up. Fed up with her small-town Texas high school that thinks the football team can do no wrong. Fed up with sexist dress codes and hallway harassment. But most of all, Viv Carter is fed up with always following the rules.

Viv’s mom was a punk rock Riot Grrrl in the ’90s, so now Viv takes a page from her mother’s past and creates a feminist zine that she distributes anonymously to her classmates. She’s just blowing off steam, but other girls respond. Pretty soon Viv is forging friendships with other young women across the divides of cliques and popularity rankings, and she realizes that what she has started is nothing short of a girl revolution

Review : I really loved this book it was awesome vivian gets inspired by her mom’s zines to create this zine called moxie girls and thats what I loved this whole girl power thing. There are a lot of douche bag guys in vivians school , vivian ends up making friends with a girl name lucy and I really like lucy and vivians friendship. The whole dress code shit is such a sexist bullshit , but sadly its a real thing that happens . Vivian meets the new guy in her school while sneaking into the school early to pass out moxie he keeps her secret and they end up going out on a date which was sweet . After someone made an announcement of a walk out cause the principle son almost raped this girl it happens the walk out happens and what I loved about this book it gives girls a voice I really want to read more books like this .

Quotes

it occurs to me that this is what it means to be a feminist. Not a humanist or an equalist or whatever. But a feminist. It’s not a bad word. After today it might be my favorite word. Because really all it is is girls supporting each other and wanting to be treated like human beings in a world that’s always finding ways to tell them they’re not.”

Making girls monitor their behavior and their appearance because boys are supposedly unable to control themselves? That is one of the oldest fucking tricks in the book.”

Cass explains that she fallowed Emma and that emma was pregnant and she ran away and she came with with with these two people who ended up being crazy people and tried to take Emma’s baby and only cass was able to escape . Review : I had heard this graphic novel was good but it was really good I loved it. I read it with the audiobook which made the experience way better .This is about Nimona who is a shapeshifter who is working with a super vilian this graphic novel was crazy cause there may be more to her powers that blackheart doesnt know and the prince is an interesting character I really enjoyed this book I recommend it.

Book Review: Things im seeing without you Peter Bognanni

Things I'm Seeing Without YouThings I’m Seeing Without You by Peter Bognanni
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

October 29- December 11

Seventeen-year-old Tess Fowler has just dropped out of high school. She can barely function after learning of Jonah’s death. Jonah, the boy she’d traded banter with over texts and heartfelt e-mails.

Jonah, the first boy she’d told she loved and the first boy to say it back.

Jonah, the boy whose suicide she never saw coming.

Tess continues to write to Jonah, as a way of processing her grief and confusion. But for now she finds solace in perhaps the unlikeliest of ways: by helping her father with his new alternative funeral business, where his biggest client is . . . a prized racehorse?

As Tess’s involvement in her father’s business grows, both find comfort in the clients they serve and in each other. But love, loss, and life are so much more complicated than Tess ever thought. Especially after she receives a message that turns her life upside down.

Review : This book was beautiful and sad Tess’s boyfriend Jonah killed himself and she’s not doing very well she’s dropped out of school moved in with her dad and then she finds out to the end of Jonah’s end that his roommate was msg her which she was hurt about . Her dad and her are doing this special funeral business and Jonah’s roommate vists her and they talk and decide to plan Jonah’s funeral . This book made me cry cause it talked about anxiety and I could relate and if you’ve ever lost someone you should read this book . They end up in italy and do Jonahs funeral which made me cry and the roomate and tess part ways and start writing letters it was beautiful.

Quotes: You can’t just run away from your grief . you have to deal with it head on . no matter how difficult and strange it is . we both took a drink of coffee. There are no shortcuts she said . you have to do the hard stuff before it gets any easier.

I want you to take your picture and send it to me
Its a little dark
Turn on a light , genius
Should I send it to you now
I’m going to hang up , I said , and then you’re going to send it to me . But there’s one last thing .
What ?
I want you to be naked in the picture .
More silence
Its only fair . I think you know that .
I didn’t wait for a response . I just ended the call. And I fully expected that he would call right back and try to argue his way out of it . But he didn’t do that . And as time passed at this rate about an hour per second, I wondered maybe if it was better if he didn’t do it
It would give me a chance to break contact , to prove that he never really wanted to be on even ground with me .
What does a true liar do , after all , when you ask him to stand naked .

so what’s the point of what we do ? I asked if we can’t provide that.
Well… He said . He handed me a napkin for my tears. Maybe part of its just to reaffirm to people.
Reaffirm what ?
He looked away and scratched his chin , covered in black and gray stubble . Then he met my eyes again , and for once he didnt look like a sad clown . He looked serious .
that we don’t need as much closure as we think we do .

I’m scared that I don’t matter , even a little bit and no one matters and nothing matters . I’m scared that it all matters and I’m fucking it up . I’m scared I’m living my short short life wrong in every possible way . I’m scared I’ve already made so many mistakes and I dont have enough time to fix them . I’m scared I won’t die with the slightest amount of dignity ,like on the toilet or watching bravo . I’m scared no one will care when I do . I’m scared that the only person I ever loved wasn’t real . I’m scared I will never get over him . And I’m scared I’m making the same mistake again.

Book Review: The upside of the unrequited Becky Albertalli

The Upside of Unrequited (Simonverse, #2)The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

October 15- 23

Seventeen-year-old Molly Peskin-Suso knows all about unrequited love—she’s lived through it twenty-six times. She crushes hard and crushes often, but always in secret. Because no matter how many times her twin sister, Cassie, tells her to woman up, Molly can’t stomach the idea of rejection. So she’s careful. Fat girls always have to be careful.

Then a cute new girl enters Cassie’s orbit, and for the first time ever, Molly’s cynical twin is a lovesick mess. Meanwhile, Molly’s totally not dying of loneliness—except for the part where she is. Luckily, Cassie’s new girlfriend comes with a cute hipster-boy sidekick. Will is funny and flirtatious and just might be perfect crush material. Maybe more than crush material. And if Molly can win him over, she’ll get her first kiss and she’ll get her twin back.

There’s only one problem: Molly’s coworker Reid. He’s an awkward Tolkien superfan with a season pass to the Ren Faire, and there’s absolutely no way Molly could fall for him. Right?

Review : This book was so freaking cute I related to Molly so much in this book she’s a curvy girl and she has anxiety . Molly has had 27 crushes but no boyfriends she has a twin sister and two mom’s I wasn’t a big fan of Molly’s sister I thought she could be kinda a bitch . Molly ends up introducing Cassie to her future girlfriend and then mostly after Mina comes into the picture Cassie kinda drifts away from Molly and cassie wants Molly to date Mina’s best friend Will and Molly doesn’t think will has any interest in her and then there is Reid who is just so freaking adorable I shipped him and Molly like on first meeting they just click together and Molly starts to like Reid more than a friend and when her friend Olivia looks like she has some interest in Reid Molly freaks out and gets Mad at Reid and to make him jealous she hangs out with will who doesn’t like her that way . The cool thing about this book is we got cameo’s from Simon who I love and Abby is Molly’s cousin . But Molly tells Reid how she feels which was so sweet and they kiss and next was there mom’s wedding which was so sweet I loved this book . The one problem I had was the gradmother yes she use to to be big but insulting Molly like that wasn’t cool .

Quotes:

I don’t entirely understand how anyone gets a boyfriend. Or a girlfriend. It just seems like the most impossible odds. You have to have a crush on the exact right person at the exact right moment. And they have to like you back. A perfect alignment of feelings and circumstances. It’s almost unfathomable that it happens as often as it does.”

There’s just something terrifying about admitting you like someone. In a way, it’s actually easier when there’s no chance of anything happening. But there’s this threshold where things suddenly become possible. And then your cards are on the table. And there you are, wanting, right out in the open.”

I’m on the toilet at the 9:30 Club and I’m wondering how mermaids pee.”

It’s funny, because you always think the hard part is meeting someone the first time. It’s not. It’s the second time, because you’ve already used up all the obvious topics of conversation. And even if you haven’t, it’s strange and heavy-handed to introduce random conversational topics at this stage in the game. Hi, Reid. Let’s converse about topics. HOW MANY SIBLINGS DO YOU HAVE? WHAT BOOKS DO YOU LIKE?”

Okay, I just gotta say it.” The guy touches my arm. “You are fucking gorgeous for a big girl.”
I freeze.
“It’s a compliment!”
I look at him. “Fuck you.

I’m not trying to over think things. I’m trying to be less careful . but you have to be your hearts own goalie

Execpt – oh god- what if the machine announces it
CONDOMS! TWELVE ninety nine ! Please place your GIANT box of condoms in the bag . oh but your VALUE pack of condoms is too big for our sensors . Please wait, and someone will assist you shortly .

I’m just letting him know – she start typing that Olivia would be happy to get waxed if he’s willing to wax his tiny , microscopic little peen at the same time ….

Book Review: The Hate you give Angie Thomas

The Hate U Give (The Hate U Give, #1)The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

June 4-9

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

But what Starr does or does not say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

Review : This book was very powerful when at a party with her friend she runs into her old friend Khalil and when shots go off he brings her to his car then a cop stops him and ends up shooting Khalil in front of star and she is hurting and doesn’t know what she should do she wants to speak out to help Khalil so she starts to speak she wants that cop to be arested but she knows it won’t happen which is very fucked up I mean he killed him . There is also this big drug dealer who may try to go after star cause she snitched . Star goes to a fancy school and she is a different kind of person she has a boyfriend named Chris and I really love them together and she has two friends Maya and Hailey I hated Hailey she made these remarks and I wanted to punch her and when the news came out with all the Khalil stuff she felt bad for the cop when the cop killed Khalil . And when Hailey said he would of died anyway cause he was a drug dealer I wanted to punch her and star did . When it’s announced that the cop won’t get jail time Star freaks out and wants to take a stand and she does I really loved this book it gave a message that we all need to read this and speak out .
Quotes : “Sometimes you can do everything right and things will still go wrong. The key is to never stop doing right.”

At an early age I learned that people make mistakes, and you have to decide if their mistakes are bigger than your love for them.”

Brave doesn’t mean you’re not scared. It means you go on even though you’re scared.”

Why does Chris always have to be lil’l to you ? I ask . He’s not little . You better be talking about his height says Daddy , Amen , Uncle Carlos adds and they fist bump again.

That’s the problem. We let people say stuff, and they say it so much that it becomes okay to them and normal for us. What’s the point of having a voice if you’re gonna be silent in those moments you shouldn’t be?”

“Once upon a time there was a hazel-eyed boy with dimples. I called him Khalil. The world called him a thug.
He lived, but not nearly long enough, and for the rest of my life I’ll remember how he died.
Fairy tale? No. But I’m not giving up on a better ending.”

“Once you’ve seen how broken someone is it’s like seeing them naked—you can’t look at them the same anymore.”

Griffin ends of going to california with Jackson and they end up sleeping together . Jackson tells Griffin he didnt save Theo and he went for a lifeguard and Griffin gets mad and leaves . Griffin decides to talk to wade who was theo’s best friend and his friend who he ended up sleeping with multiple times they decided to just be friends . Jackson visits again and him and Griffin talk Wade is very jealous . I feel like wade and Griffin will get together but griffin had to let Theo go I loved this book very emotional .
Quotes:
Time doesn’t heal all wounds. We both know that’s bullshit; it comes from people who have nothing comforting or original to say.”

People are complicated puzzles, always trying to piece together a complete picture, but sometimes we get it wrong and sometimes we’re left unfinished. Sometimes that’s for the best. Some pieces can’t be forced into a puzzle, or at least they shouldn’t be, because they won’t make sense.”

“History is nothing. It can be recycled or thrown away completely. It isn’t this sacred treasure chest I mistook it to be. We were something, but history isn’t enough to keep something alive forever.”

Griffin . Hey
No way
I freeze at the sound of my dad’s voice He’s right behind us.
I honestly think Id rather be caught masterbating .
wade laughs a little to himself probably. because this is going to be painfully humiliating .

I’ll never understand how time can make a moment feel as close as yesterday and as far as years.”

“But hey, if there’s one bright side to your dying, it’s that you aren’t around to tell me things I don’t like hearing. I’m sorry. That was a dickhead thing to say. I need a condom for my mouth.

Leo’s aunt explains that Leo’s dad ditched them before he was even born . David finally comes out to his family and tells them about him wanting to be a girl .
