Book Review: Flower crowns and fearsome things Amanda lovelace

Flower Crowns and Fearsome ThingsFlower Crowns and Fearsome Things by Amanda Lovelace
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

October 6-7

in her new standalone poetry collection, flower crowns & fearsome things, bestselling & award-winning poetess amanda lovelace explores the complexity of femininity through alternating wildflower & wildfire poems.

within these pages, you will find that each of us has the ability to be both soft & fierce at the same time. there is no need to choose one or the other.

Review: A beautiful collection of poetry. I loved this authors other work of poetry and I think this one may be my favorite.

Quotes

everyone loves a strong woman until that woman no longer tolerates their bullshit. —the age-old proverb.

being friends with girls isn’t too much drama, but you know what is? constantly trying to burn your sisters at the fucking stake out of pettiness & resentment when you could just support them instead. —commit to putting out more fires than you start.

is it normal for a father to make you feel like your voice is so small it doesn’t even matter? —just a stupid, silly girl.

there are days when she wants so badly to escape her life for something simple & carefree—   to wake up in a cramped cottage with a tangled & overgrown garden where she can get drunk on tea among butterflies & faeries.   oh, what a dream that would be. she would never have to see anyone again.   —magic still has to exist somewhere, right?

Book Review: The poet x Elizabeth Acevedo

The Poet X

The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Jan 4-12

A young girl in Harlem discovers slam poetry as a way to understand her mother’s religion and her own relationship to the world. Debut novel of renowned slam poet Elizabeth Acevedo.

Xiomara Batista feels unheard and unable to hide in her Harlem neighborhood. Ever since her body grew into curves, she has learned to let her fists and her fierceness do the talking.

But Xiomara has plenty she wants to say, and she pours all her frustration and passion onto the pages of a leather notebook, reciting the words to herself like prayers—especially after she catches feelings for a boy in her bio class named Aman, who her family can never know about. With Mami’s determination to force her daughter to obey the laws of the church, Xiomara understands that her thoughts are best kept to herself.

So when she is invited to join her school’s slam poetry club, she doesn’t know how she could ever attend without her mami finding out, much less speak her words out loud. But still, she can’t stop thinking about performing her poems.

Because in the face of a world that may not want to hear her, Xiomara refuses to be silent

Review : I loved this book I highly reccomend the audiobook . Xiomara is a teenager who is going through a lot her body has changed a lot her mother has all these religious views and xiomara doesn’t know what she believes anymore she meets this guy who she really likes but shit goes real when her mom finds out . this book is told in verse and I love verse books and the audiobook is read by the author and it was a beautifully written book . Xiomara finds out her twin brother is gay . Xiomara joins the poetry club where she gets to let out her emotions . after a big blow up with her family Xiomara calls the guy again and they start talking again . And she has her family priest help with her family to help them all talk this out . Xiomara finally performs her poem at the slam event . I believe everyone she read this book .
The only issue I have with this book is the religion and physical abuse aspect and it didn’t really get resolved .

Quotes :And I think about all the things we could be
if we were told our bodies were not built for them

When your body takes up more room than your voice you are always the target of well-aimed rumors,

“And isn’t that what a poem is? A lantern glowing in the dark.

Book Review: impulse Ellen Hopkins

Impulse (Impulse, #1)Impulse by Ellen Hopkins
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Impulse by Ellen Hopkins
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Verdict : Beautifully written
May 11- June 19

Sometimes you don’t wake up. But if you happen to, you know things will never be the same.

Three lives, three different paths to the same destination: Aspen Springs, a psychiatric hospital for those who have attempted the ultimate act — suicide.

Vanessa is beautiful and smart, but her secrets keep her answering the call of the blade.

Tony, after suffering a painful childhood, can only find peace through pills.

And Conner, outwardly, has the perfect life. But dig a little deeper and find a boy who is in constant battle with his parents, his life, himself.

In one instant each of these young people decided enough was enough. They grabbed the blade, the bottle, the gun — and tried to end it all. Now they have a second chance, and just maybe, with each other’s help, they can find their way to a better life — but only if they’re strong and can fight the demons that brought them here in the first place.

Review : This book was beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time it’s about 3 people Vanessa , Tony , and Conner who all have been through a lot and find themselves all in mental hospital and all become friends and some more than that . They each all have problems Vanessa is a cutter who tried to kill herself and Conner put a bullet through his chest . Tony had a bad childhood and resorted to pills . I feel a lot of people can relate to this book we’ve all been through something . Conner has a taste for older woman and slept with his teacher Connors’s family has very high exceptions for him he has a fraternal twin sister and a bitch mother . Tony went to Jail awhile ago for punching his mom’s boyfriend who use to do things to him . Vanessa likes Conner and there pretty hot and heavy for awhile but what I didn’t expect was Tony and vanessa together but I love them together they go to this camping trip so they can complete there time at aspen spring . Conner is going through a lot his family being not supportive pieces of crap . And Tony and Vanessa are all lovey dovey so cute I love them together they care for each other. I thought Tony was gay in the most of the book and so did he but maybe he’s Bi . And when they are rock climbing after they get there letters from there family Conner of course got a crappy one from his mom and he got angry and he flung himself off and died I started sobbing cause he went through a lot this book was heartbreaking there are probably a lot of trigger warnings in this book so be warned but as my first Ellen Hopkins book I loved it .
Quotes-
I love you , too Vanessa , and in my life , love is rare . You are rare -someone who bothered to scratch under my skin and find the person beneath.

Hey , Tony , I test . I’ll give you a kiss too, if you say please .
You wish , he jabs . But I prefer a man who likes to be on top.
ouch little brother I like it on top and on the bottom and standing up . And …oh , man I gotta stop or jerk off.

Memory is a tenuous thing , like a rainbow’s end or a camera with a failing lens. Sometimes my focus is sharp , every detail clean as the splashes of it either, fringing the evaluation eaves ; other times it’s hazy field of frost , like the meadow

My happiest memories have no place in the past; they are those I have yet to create

Her smile is like summer moonlight-beautiful and magical, with a fire that could melt the night

Tony’s Kiss

Is like no other kiss, ever.
It wants, but does not demand.
It asks, but doesn’t take.
It gives, and pleads for more.
It is filled with desire,
but also curiosity,
and it teaches me that a kiss should
come gift wrapped, not stripped naked. Most of all,
it makes me want another kiss
exactly like this one.”

Book Review: chasers of the Light Tyler knott Gregson

Chasers of the Light: Poems from the Typewriter SeriesChasers of the Light: Poems from the Typewriter Series by Tyler Knott Gregson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

October 10-10
The epic made simple. The miracle in the mundane.

One day, while browsing an antique store in Helena, Montana, photographer Tyler Knott Gregson stumbled upon a vintage Remington typewriter for sale. Standing up and using a page from a broken book he was buying for $2, he typed a poem without thinking, without planning, and without the ability to revise anything.

He fell in love.

Three years and almost one thousand poems later, Tyler is now known as the creator of the Typewriter Series: a striking collection of poems typed onto found scraps of paper or created via blackout method. Chasers of the Light features some of his most insightful and beautifully worded pieces of work—poems that illuminate grand gestures and small glimpses, poems that celebrate the beauty of a life spent chasing the light

Review – This poetry is amazing I love the format and the poems are gorgeous go read this book I connected with allot of the poem .

quotes-

Sometimes you look up and there just seems to be so many more stars that ever before. More. They burn brighter and they shine longer and they never vanish into your periphery when you turn your head. It’s as if they come out for us and to remind us that their light took so long to come to us, that if we never had the patience to wait, we never would have seen them here, tonight, like this.

That as much as it hurts, sometimes it’s all you can do, wait, endure and keep shining, knowing that eventually, your light will reach where it is supposed to reach and shine for who it is supposed to shine for.

It is never easy, but it is always worth it.”

You
are the poem
I never knew
how to write
and this life
is the story
I have always
wanted
to tell.”

The Black Butterfly is a symbol of transformation and rebirth after death. Drake wrote this book for those who have lost someone in death and in life. This book is a collection of memories and experiences Drake lived after the death of one of his brothers.
